While we prepare for travel, barbecues, fireworks, as we celebrate another year of this great nation’s Independence–the birth of a nation and its freedom from the British Empire–I wonder how many are hollow, empty, and sense their need for someone and something greater–Jesus and his unconditional love.
As a nation, as a culture, we are so enslaved to greed, selfishness, individualism, consumerism, substance abuse, sexual abuse, and the like.
Ironically, in pursuit of the American dream, we have come enslaved, yes, enslaved to our own wanton passions. But there is freedom.
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. (2 Cor. 3:17 NIV)
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. (Gal. 5:1 NIV)
So I submit to every free American citizen, not to pursue the American dream and become enslaved to their wanton passions, but to pursue the Lord Jesus Christ–our true Independence.
Happy Fourth of July!
