Quote of the Day: John Piper on Bonhoeffer’s Engagement

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was engaged to Maria when he was hanged. He never married, skipping the shadow on the way to the reality.  (source: Piper’s tweet, italics added)

Simplicity dripping with profundity.  I love it!

  1. Simon says:

Ummm I’m not sure that marriage is meant to be seen as a “shadow”. Marriage itself is a reality – two people becoming one flesh. It is a picture (image) of what the Church’s union with Christ. Marriage is a concrete image of this union. So I think the shadow/reality motif is the wrong category here. And, I’m sure Piper would agree, a good marriage centred in Christ is a wonderful blessing – perhaps even a sacrament? 😉

Simon, I don’t think he would agree with marriage as a sacrament. 🙂 I’ve both heard and read him on marriage, and this remains his position. Perhaps he has Eph. 5:32. Yes, I favor picture more, when you think about it.
