Same-sex Marriage Is Here To Stay

The media and politicians are working overtime to remove the stigma, the taboo of homosexuality.  Let’s face it, either someone in our family is going to be gay, or we are going to know someone close to us who is actually gay.  This is the changing world we are living in.  Once anti-gay and conservative politicians are finding this out.  Even leading conservative politicians are singing a different tune.

This is our changing world.  The avalanche is coming (some would say that it is already here).

And yes, we know of denominations and churches who have already caved in–thus making Rob Bell’s recent sentiments not wholly unexpected.

Same-sex is here to stay.  Let’s face it.

Now the church, the body of redeemed believers who march to a different drummer, must continue to respond.

But not like the Westboro Baptist Church (see here).

We cannot afford to be angry and anti-, marching the streets with signs and the like.  No, there is indeed a better way.

It’s the Jesus way.  Yes, we condemn the same of homosexuality, even if our love ones are thus, but we need to love them.  Not be quick to condemn the person, but to love them.

In other words, let’s fight same-sex marriage, homosexuality and the like, with the love of Christ, for I know of no other winning way for the people of God.  Do you?

Agreed, NPR has been examining the recent shift toward this acceptance, and attribute some of it to the success of Ellen DeGeneres. She’s just so like-able. I too, wonder how to navigate this, and am reminded that this is not new. The New Testament was written in a Graeco-Roman culture where homosexuality, cult prostitution and all kinds of exploitive sexuality was well-known. For myself, I want to focus on adhering to the gospel and its demands, not preserving a more morally-conservative America. I think Jesus and the Apostles would have the church be pro-homosexuals, and anti-homosexuality. Are homosexuals any different than the prostitutes, tax collectors and other sinners Jesus attracted? Christians should stand with scripture about this sin like all sins (our included) without stigmatizing it needlessly.

Lon, thanks for this. Yeah, Ellen is indeed likeable. I think of a Anderson Cooper who I enjoy so much over at CNN. But you are so right about Jesus and the apostles rather than attempting to preserve “morally-conservative America.”
