Advent Readings

Advent begins on Sunday, December 1.

I will be making my annual pilgrimage with John Piper’s Good News of Great Joy: Daily Readings for Advent, which has been available for free by the kind folks at Piper’s Desiring God Ministries in the following formats: PDF, EPUB (iBooks, Nook), MOBI (Kindle).  See here

I encourage Advent Reading for two reasons: first, it helps the believer to keep Christ central during this hectic time of the year.  If we are honest with ourselves, it is so easy to be overwhelmed by all the activities this time of year brings that we often struggle with keeping the main thing the main thing, that is, the celebration and exaltation of King Jesus–and that is if we have time.

Second, it helps the reader to make that Advent journey with the church universal.  We get to experience this time of year with brothers and sisters from all over the globe, all walks of life, and various Christian traditions and denominations.  How awesome is that!  As the psalmist reminds us, “How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity!” (133:1 NRSV)

Interesting…. didn’t realise that Baptists follow the Church seasons. Is this confined to more informed Baptists, or do all Baptists follow the church calendar beyond Christmas day and Easter.?
