  1. Simon says:

I don’t know whether i’m on the same page as Piper on this one. Systematic theology in order to know God… really? Systematic theology is written so that people can know about God – not necessarily to come into contact with him. But if reading a massive theological text helps people with porn, then I guess it is a good thing.

To know God is to pray. Doing true theology is prayer. This is why Evagrius said “If you are a theologian you truly pray. If you truly pray you are a theologian.”

Replace those evil images with good images. Go through the spiritual discipline of prayer everyday. This is what has helped me spiritually. For protestants, the Book of Common Prayer’s evening and morning prayers are probably the best spiritual tools to help people struggling with all kinds of sins and circumstances that life throws at us. The young man from England who wrote to Piper should really attend one of the great churches there regularly for morning and evening prayer. Here Scripture is read, the psalms prayed, beautiful images from Scripture are represented. This would be my antidote to some of the darkest thoughts that come into our heads.

    • TC Robinson says:

Simon, I’m with you to a degree. But Piper’s point is to so saturate your mind with biblical doctrines that you will not have anytime for pornography.

      • Simon says:

In that case, why not saturate your mind with another intellectual exercise like mathematics? Dry theological texts can be detached spiritually, just like a math textbook. I’m sure Piper wouldn’t disagree with prayer and worship as an antidote to porn. Of course, keeping busy working and studying is also helpful. But I guess that we need worship. This guy has an idol called sex and porn. It’s a destructive kind of false worship. We need true worship. That is my point.

  2. TC Robinson says:

Simon, if you noticed that Piper preface his Grudem recommendation with the fact that justification had already occurred but the person was only struggling with this vice – so mathematics wouldn’t work. 😉

  3. Kristoff says:

Simon. I would suggest you read Piper’s work “The Pleasures of God”. This book will show that theology is anything but “dry”. Check it out,its a life changer.
