Interesting that Hillsong are using a creedal formula in writing songs these days. This seems to be a trend with the evangelical world in general. I wonder if evangelicals, even the more charismatic types like Hillsong, are taking more stock of the Fathers and the early church. The other interesting thing in this song is that there are images of Orthodox Churches in the film clip. Perhaps this represents a longing of evangelical Christians for something more rooted in history than what they usually get.

The link shows us a wonderful story behind this new and delightful setting inspired by the Creed. We have been using others, inspired by the Apostle’s Creed for some years. Such as “We Believe in God the Father”, Kendrick 1986; and with a weaker link “I believe in Jesus” Nelson 1987. There is another 3 verse setting starting “We believe in God the father”, which is “authorised” in the CoE Common Worship. It can be sung to a number of traditional hymn tunes, such as Austria, Hyfrydol, and Ode to Joy. When I am fronting a service I sometimes use one of these instead of reciting the Creed per se. Hopefully I can introduce this one in due course.
