Pope Francis Meets President of Panama Juan Carlos VarelaLast week New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan gave his okay to the St. Patrick Day Parade Committee’s decision to allow a gay group to march in the 2015 parade under their own banner. This was a remarkable shift from one of Dolan’s predecessors Cardinal John O’Connor who in 1993 declared that to allow a gay group to march in the parade would be a slander to the Apostle’s Creed.

This closes a remarkable summer in which a number of high-ranking Catholic prelates have signaled that Pope Francis’s more open posture on gay issues has permeated through the Catholic world. In May, a top-ranking Italian bishop said that the Church should be more open to arguments in support of same-sex marriage. And just a few weeks ago, one of Pope Francis’s closest friends Brazilian Cardinal Cláudio Hummes said in an interview that he “didn’t know” whether Jesus would oppose gay marriage.

All of this comes as the Catholic Church prepares for October’s Synod on the Family. This blockbuster event will bring bishops from around the world to Rome to discuss among other things, how the Church should change its pastoral practices towards those in same-sex relationships.  more…

After reading the article in its entirety, there has been some ‘evolving’ for sure, considering the tone of some of the current Pope’s predecessors.

Now, what I’m interested in is this: if the Catholic Church were to go all the way and recognized same-sex marriages, where would that leave a conservative denomination like the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC)?

That is a really good question, TC!

Something I thought I’d never see, and yet the shift is incredibly rapid. As an SBC pastor, I can see that the state conventions would not stand for this. What I don’t think will happen is that the SBC as a whole accepting homosexual marriage as normal. While the SBC has its “progressive” elements, as a whole leaders who advocated this would see an immediate drop in support. If the SBC accepts gay marriage as a biblical alternative, youh short timers.

David, I believe an SBC church pastor has chosen the “third way” on the matter. If the SBC were to accept gay marriage, I’m sure it wouldn’t be in anytime soon.

It would surely be quite a radical statement of Rome’s views on Catholicity and how it understands the Catholic Church if it followed such a route without the EOs making similar moves.
