The Challenge to Go Deeper

Superficiality is the curse of our age. The desperate need today is not for a greater number of intelligent people, or gifted people, but for deep people.

goingdeeperThe above quote comes from Richard J. Foster’s Celebration of the Discipline, which was first published in 1978.  Now–fast forward some 37 years.  Stop.  Look around. Listen.  Carefully.  As if to take a pulse of our culture, only to realize that not much has changed.  In fact, things may have indeed gotten worse since 1978.  For example, consider socia media and its promises (for many, we’re especially thankful), many of which have become pitfalls.  We have actually become more superficial and distracted.

And therefore my countercultural challenge for us to go deeper–as Jesus followers… (Colossians 2:7).

I work through his book every couple of years. Slowly I am finding his disciplines becoming second nature.
