As an American friend of mine put it, most Western churchgoers treat the gospels as the optional chips and dip at the start of the evening.  They are the cocktail nibbles.  Only after that do we sit down at table for the red meat of Pauline theology.  –N.T. Wright

    This may be the case at the scholarly level (I don’t know) but it seems not the case for “the average western church goer”. I think biblical illiteracy among these people is a far more common experience. They don’t know the words gospel or Pauline.

      Lon, I’m trying to understand you here: What do you mean by “biblical illiteracy?” And are you also suggesting, that with “biblical literacy” (however you define it) does charge by N.T. Wright wouldn’t stand?
