    TC, how is the Reformed view of manhood different from the macho, jock image we get from general society? I hear guys like Piper use terms like “wimp” to label his theological opponents. As if real men, so to speak, are rugged and Reformed. This seems like a reincarnation of the Victorian masculinity, otherwise known as “muscular Christianity”, in England in the late 19th century. All men are type-cast as these strong macho leaders. It’s a little worrying for anyone who doesn’t fit that mold. I know deep down, the Reformed think guys like Rob Bell and weak and girly that’s why his theology is weak and girly. I just think this is a little too black and white. The world is a little more complicated than that.

      Simon, this is a fair critique in many respects, especially since you’re speaking of the neo-Calvinists. But Eric Mason, from whose book I took this quote, transcends this approach to manhood. I think you would commend most of it. 😉

    I’m sure I would. And it is a fair critique of western society, that what it means to be a man, and the responsibilities that that entails, has been diminished.
