We need fathers, and we’re only going to be fathers to our children when we see that true fatherhood is rooted and defined in God the Father.”  –Eric Mason, Manhood Restored

  1. TC, how is the Reformed view of manhood different from the macho, jock image we get from general society? I hear guys like Piper use terms like “wimp” to label his theological opponents. As if real men, so to speak, are rugged and Reformed. This seems like a reincarnation of the Victorian masculinity, otherwise known as “muscular Christianity”, in England in the late 19th century. All men are type-cast as these strong macho leaders. It’s a little worrying for anyone who doesn’t fit that mold. I know deep down, the Reformed think guys like Rob Bell and weak and girly that’s why his theology is weak and girly. I just think this is a little too black and white. The world is a little more complicated than that.

    1. Simon, this is a fair critique in many respects, especially since you’re speaking of the neo-Calvinists. But Eric Mason, from whose book I took this quote, transcends this approach to manhood. I think you would commend most of it. 😉

  2. I’m sure I would. And it is a fair critique of western society, that what it means to be a man, and the responsibilities that that entails, has been diminished.
