At our dinner table yesterday, as we went around the table, asking each other about goals for 2019, everyone said that they would like to read the Bible more (a smile was left on my face, because I know how important Bible reading is).
As much as I’m excited for my own family, I would love to see other families doing the same in 2019.
To be honest, I’m shocked at the biblical illiteracy that I continue to witness in the US. This illiteracy is even more disappointing when we consider how readily available the Bible is for Americans–just an app away!
So I make this urgent appeal to my fellow Christ followers: resolve to read your Bibles in 2019. There’s not a shortage of reading plans available for the one wishing to read their Bible.
As for me, my approach to Bible reading has always been thematic:
- whether it’s the Pentateuch, the historical books of the Old Testament, the Wisdom books or the Prophets.
- I’m always in the four Gospels and the Letters of Paul.
In your own Bible reading, I encourage you to do the following:
- Set goals. Perhaps you want to know more about Israel’s history.
- Make it your own. Then find a reading plan that will help you achieve this.
- Be Patient. But don’t be in a hurry. Take your time.
- Be worshipful. Remember, you are reading God’ word. God is speaking to you through the written word.
- Seek guidance. As you read, seek God’s guidance on how to respond to what you are discovering: perhaps truths about God that you need to stop and ponder, or commands to apply your own life.
Additionally, before I forget, have fun as you read. Don’t make this burdensome.
